Description

Is it possible to specify times that are blacked out for boat crossings on the Forbes Ave. (Route 1) drawbridge raising times in New Haven? Nearly every time I cross the bridge in the morning I hit it raised or rising. There seems to be no specific times so there is no way to adjust your travel by a few minutes in order to try and miss it. Sometimes, if I am dropping my daughter off at school, I get caught on it going and returning, maybe 15 minutes later. Hundreds of cars back up on both sides during these rush hour raises. The tension and anger is palpable and as the gates go up and the lights change to green, annoyed drivers typically stomp on the accelerator and try to get the pole position. It is particularly irritating when the boat passing under the bridge is but a small, maybe two man fishing vessel. I suggest to have time periods where boat passage is not allowed during high traffic commuting times (7-9am & 4-6pm), except for emergency of course. Or at least make the boats wait until on the hour or half hour, then it would be somewhat possible to plan your car bridge crossings. Picture is from about 8am on a Tuesday the line of cars behind me is even bigger than in front.
