Description

I know the city is trying its best to handle this snow and did a great job with the last two footer in December by laying down a layer of salt before the snow came. There was enough salt to melt the snow to a degree that the street was passable in a short time. This time, Friday night the salt was spread and two feet or more of snow followed. It was a slow process but the salt was working. Then the trouble began. A city pick-up with a plow came in from 21st Street and pushed the snow as far as it could until the weight of the snow forced the truck to stop leaving a five foot pile a third of the way down the street. Early Sunday morning a front end loader came in from 22nd Street and pushed snow as far as it could until the weight of the snow stopped the machine giving us another five foot compacted pile (see attached images). The end result is that the street is blocked not by a deep snow, but by work done by the city. Had neither plow arrived, the wheels of a garbage truck or front end loader with bucket up could have made the street passable as was the case on Tryon. People complain that the city doesn’t do anything, but in this case it may have done too much. As of 9 a.m. this morning no one has come back to finish the job. The latest forecast predicts another 6-12” for tomorrow and I am afraid that our ignored block might become the site of a glacier.
