Description
Welcome to New Haven. Every day or two I ride to the top of East Rock Park and pick up trash the good citizens of New Haven and Hamden save up at home so they can use to despoil the beauty of this wonderful park.
Why do our citizens pick such a lovely place to litter and pollute its natural beauty? Bad upbringing? Poor role models? An inherited trashiness? Bad judgment? Ignorance?
Whatever the reason, every day these poor citizens drop fast food, tobacco, alcohol, candy wrappers and bags as well as used diapers and other everyday refuse you would hold onto until it could be properly disposed.
So what's to be done?
How can we educate and fix this?
I don't know but please weigh in with suggestions below.
By the way, after a 5 day absence from my litter runs up East Rock today I snagged three (3) bulging grocery bags full of trash -- and that's just from the parking lot to the hairpin curve. I ran out of bags and had to leave some behind for tomorrow.
Let's hear some constructive advice and practical solutions.
Thanks

We're not making a dent Mayor Harp. We need enforcement and tickets and fines. Please?

1. Seriously, how can we ask Mayor Harp to give @Mahfouz some sort of certificate or award? We should be publicly encouraging this sort of positive, clean-up behavior.
2. I keep hearing rumors--but still only rumors--about some sort of citywide "Clean City" campaign. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY MORE DETAILS? The schools NEED to be involved!
3. This is the only lesson I ever needed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7OHG7tHrNM

We ended up leaving New Haven. We had many reasons, but one of them certainly was how much trash there was everywhere. It is not a question of more trash cans. Too many people in New Haven do not see anything wrong with dropping their trash right where they are. I certainly saw New Haven cops drop garbage from their patrol cars into the street on more than one occasion.
Mahfouz and others who pick up the trash are good people. Thank you to them.
