Description
Pedestrians in this area have no sidewalks or bridge crossings to walk on. This is a high traffic area, a school zone, and a very narrow street. There are many pedestrians and bicyclers using this road which is a dangerous and unsafe area for them. Millbrook High School, Millbrook Exchange Park, and the convenient stores, CVS pharmacy, and eateries are of local interest in this area. Street Lamps and better illumination along walking areas would also be needed for the pedestrians and children who walk and bike ride in this area. This is a great area to plan a connection to the capital greenways trails system. Please improve the safety in this area to avoid possible fatalities and serious injuries to pedestrian and bicyclers. This is a school area and there are many children and adults are walking in the area at all times. I am requesting a paved bicycle route and sidewalk specifically designed for pedestrians to cross over the railroad tracks. This would be safer for this community and school area. The speed limit in this area needs to be reduced for safety.

This section of street is maintained by NCDOT and is not constructed to City standard. I have referred your request to the Public Works Department for comment, but generally streets would need to be brought up to City standard with curb and gutter before sidewalk would be considered to be added. Normally on a small section of street like this a petition would need to be submitted by the abutting property owners. More information on that process is available here:

We have this section identified in our proposed pedestrian plan priority list. Specifically, the segment is Old Wake Forest Road from Litchford Rd to Ruritania St (just after the bridge over the rail line). This project will be a major street improvement project as it requires the addition of curb and gutter and widening of the bridge to accommodate pedestrian infrastructure.
The draft priority list will be available for public comment this summer. For more information contact Jennifer Baldwin (jennifer.baldwin@raleighnc.gov)
