The system has also been used to notify residents of street sweeping and service changes that may affect the community. It's designed to provide information about "emergencies and other important New Haven alerts". Destefano used it in the same manner. I haven't noticed any gross misuse of the system. Isn't notification about a "City Transformation Plan" review and comment opportunity an important thing to residents?

I hope the meeting goes well, but I too thought it was an odd use of the Emergency Operations system. Parking bans, snow emergencies, natural or human-made disasters all are what I expect.

If it says "and other important New Haven alerts" then that gives room for important information. The definition of 'important' is pretty subjective, and may vary between both senders and receivers. It could cover any thing considered significant, but should not be used for personal or political purposes. Anyone can opt out of receiving them. I don't get them and I do alright.

Its good to get the EMERGENCY announcements for things like SCSC testing their emergency system and not to panic, parking bans, storm updates, etc, etc.. You can opt out of receiving these calls, but some are important.

My point is that there needs to be another system for general announcements like, health care reminders, town meetings, election information, etc. With today's technology there is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON TO USE THE EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTER TO RELAY NON-EMERGENCY INFORMATION.

If everyone opts out of this alert system for Harp crying wolf then what good is the overall system.?

Isnt there a way to let people know @ these less than 911 notices??? Oh wait, there is!! The New Haven Register, the New Haven Independent, Radio stations.

Now hear this. Whatever the Mayor says is important.

Dawn.. who buys the Register? and how long does it take for an article that is less than emergency to get in? plus the Register is privately owned and can choose what to put in and what not, same for the Independent and radio stations. all privately owned and not generally subscribed to. The City has an obligation to put out these notices, or the meetings are not valid.
"Me too",, it would work to install a separate system for the two kinds of announcements, but who is going to pay for that? Most people want taxes cut and don't realize that means cutting services too.

Mayor does want to change system. No vote here !!
