Description
The lanes going both east and west have an extra lane on the far right used for turning right. If you're going east, you turn into the banks. If west, you turn into some offices (Chickfila will be on the left in the Arboretum).
The problem is that when traffic backs up at the traffic lights, to go east or west, people use the far right lanes that are meant for turning to race ahead of all the traffic. Just a few months back I saw a very bad wreck where a car going eastbound actually got cut off and was forced into the shrubbery on the side. While I haven't seen it happen, it concerns me that possible pedestrians walking across the intersection will be struck by a car "racing" in that far right lane.
It seems CMPD knows about this issue as right after the wreck I saw a squad car sitting in the lane facing eastbound so that nobody could get in it.

This is a significant issue as the other reporter stated. Drivers using these far right lanes have become more and more aggressive. In the past week, I have been swerved at and nearly hit 3 times by aggressive drivers using these "racing" lanes... literally swerved at by aggessive drivers who is frustrated because I wouldn't/couldn't slow down to let them in. As the other poster commmented, these are to be used for tuning into the businesses on the right from both directions on 51. However, divers are using them to race past drivers in the legitimate lanes and they do so aggressively. This causes safetty hazards as well as significant delays as these selfish, inconsiderate drivers cause slowdowns in the traffic patterns as drivers are forced to let them in. I've witnessed delays, witnessed accidents and near miss accidents and also near misses with pedestrians as drivers aggressively pass in these lanes and in the middle of this busy intersection. Something has to be done to resolve this issues. Police should be aware of this, but are never near monitoring the issue that occurs 100% of the mornings in commuter traffic.
The solution is fairly simple:
In both directions on Providence, approaching the intersection, the far right lanes are secured and defined by "traffic barriers" in the form of plastic posts. These were put in place to protect the traffic pattern and pedestrians at that intersection from Providence. These posts could/should be extended through the intersection to 51 blocking drivers from using them to enter the intersection and pass others. This would still allow drivers plenty of access to the far right lane (beyond the intersection) to enter into the business centers as these lanes are designed to allow. This would also prevent drivers from using the far right lane on both sides of 51 to race past other drivers.
A serious accident is going to occur here if something is not done. I've alerted the police, but obviously they feel the issue isn't significant enough.
