Description

There is a strong smell of sewage in front of a house currently under construction. Smell is present almost every day stronger in the heat and smells of sewage or something decomposing.

The issue pre dates the construction and has been ongoing for at least 6 months. There are clogged drains on either side of the steet but also some strange set up covering the basement windows/drains???

Added some pictures from google st.

Does not seem very healthy and should be looked into. There was also a gas leak in this property just a couple of days ago.

This has been an ongoing problem here for years. i think the sanitary sewers back up into the catch basins and don't flush back out creating the stink. They installed some kind of a trap a couple of years ago that helped but didn't eliminate the problem. The catch basins need to be cleaned out regularly, probably a couple of times a year to minimize the problem if it is not going to be fixed properly.

Even though the pic is on the other side of the street it tells a story. Look at the debris in the catch basin. The catch basins here are not maintained regularly making the problem worse. All of the catch basins in this general vicinity exhibit the odor. I made the mistake of parking my car over the one in the picture and It stunk afterwords. I think that one might be behind the Jersey Barier now but it probably still stinks.

This is not a private property maintenance issue. The smell is not coming from private property. It is coming from the catch basins located in the street.
The city or WPCA is responsible for maintaining the catch basins and the sewer lines located in the street.

I think the catch basin pipes and the sewage pipes were separated a few years ago, weren't they. The storm drains should not smell like sewage.
I was trying to figure that photo out.. lol.. wrong one.

They installed some sort of trap in the sewer but at best, it only works marginally. The sewers are still combined and it seems that the sewage still backs up into the storm drains, especially when they are not maintained.

Frank, how long have you lived in that neighborhood? I remember the big project and all the new large pipes that were put in. I don't know anything about traps being installed.. traps do have to be cleaned. Maybe people have been throwing too much of their dog do and other crap into the storm drains.

I've owned property there for over ten years and have been complaining about the smell for most of that time. The smell is definitely coming from the sewers. It's not as bad as it was before they installed the traps but it still stinks.

The Greater New Haven WPCA does not perform corrective or routine maintenance to the Catch Basins within the City of New Haven. We have a large diameter sewer which has not experienced backup issues in this area. The GNHWPCA will dispatch a crew to investigate this concern and verify that our system free from obstructions.

Yes. It still stinks. I think that everybody knows there is a problem here but nobody wants to own it. WPCA says it's not their responsibility but who's responsibility is it? Catch basins are not supposed to smell like sewage. If it smells like sewage one would think that the smell is most likely coming from the sewer. It is highly unlikely that somebody has been dumping sewage into the catch basins for all these years.

I know a lot of people dump their dogs' crap into the catch basins, and other miscellaneous stuff. Occassionally I see a big truck with a vacuum suck up junk from the catch basins. Maybe it's time.
