Description
The intersection at Trinity and Edwards Mill is missing two crosswalks. Currently they are only on the north and east sides. So, if I'm on the SW corner (where I work), I can't safely access the greenway on the NE corner. Could you please add 2 more sidewalks so people coming from the office park can safely cross Trinity and Edwards Mill to access the greenway? Thank you!

The city of Raleigh maintains 600+ signalized intersections. 80% fall in the NCDOT state highway system which includes Edwards Mill Road and Trinity. Of the 600+ we maintain, 200+ lack any form of pedestrian accommodations (ped heads and marked cross walks). Of those 100 or so lack side walk to sidewalk connectivity. We have prioritized all the locations so we can equitable install accommodations at those that have sidewalk networks. Unfortunately,in this situation, the greenway which is a trip generator is adjacent to a signal that lacks pedestrian signal accommodations on all four corners. Since this locations generates a lot of pedestrian activity due to football and special events, I can see a big benefit of upgrading the two missing legs. Unfortunately we do not have a dedicated source of funding for these type improvements. We have been trying to improve a handful of the top rated locations every year with our operating budget. A costly part of these upgrades is changing the older style wheel chair ramps to current ADA standard ones. This further limits the number of locations we can upgrade each year.
The good news is Parks Recreation and Cultural Resources has a long range plan that specifically looks at existing infrastructure surrounding greenways and parks. Public Works will be working with them to ensure these City installed trip generators have adequate infrastructure to allow citizens to use the facilities. It would not be equitable to move this location to the top of the list because a request was received. Rather we are in the process of re-evaluating our list to ensure situations like this are adequately accounted for. Therefore I cannot promise pedestrian signal heads and marked crosswalks will be added this year. I can promise we are aware and we are working diligently with NCDOT (they would have to produce new signal plans) to improve areas like this and make Raleigh more walkable.
