Description
A large drainage ditch parallels the Santa Fe trail beginning at a small basin near the intersection of the Santa fe trail and the White Rock Creek and lake trail. The ditch runs south parallelling the Santa Fe trail. This small basin and the ditch flowing south often exude bad sewage-like smells, but recently they have been oozing really awful sewage smells. I reported the problem to the city and they flushed the ditch and added something for the smell. The smell is not nearly as bad as it was along most of the ditch. However, the smell is still horrid at the small basin near the trail intersections. Clearly, there is a significant ongoing pollution problem here that needs to be corrected at its source, rather than simply having the smell reduced. This is a major recreational area. How many joggers and bicyclers have to gag as they pass this location?

I rode by here again today and the smell was almost gone. I don't know if the city did some more work out there, or if nature just took care of the immediate problem. I will keep the issue open for a while to make sure the actual cause of the problem has been addressed though.

I have ridden by this area several times since I first reported it, and it is clearly greatly improved. I will continue to monitor the situation. Clearly, there was sewage discharging into this ditch and creating a serious aesthic and human health problem. The problem seems to have been temporarily solved. Only time will tell whether the underlying problem has been solved.

I've ridden by this location a number of times since I first reported it, and have not experienced the sewage smells that I reported earlier. I'm convinced that the particular problem I reported has been resolved, or has resolved itself. However, I am not convinced the underlying problem- sewage overflows and bypasses at this location- have been fixed. We'll simply have to wait and see what happens when we get more high rainfall events.
