A response at some point would be great. Our community group is willing to help in some way, but the city really needs to step up and take the lead on this. For example, if they can clear out the mess, we can perhaps find volunteers to bag it.

Hopefully, the city can find some time to address this problem this summer. Any takers?

Do you think the discovery of a dismembered body not far from these unhealthy mounds of garbage that have been created in the strip of land bordering the Union Street dog park and the railroad tracks will inspire some city official to think about finally cleaning things up? When a place looks as though no one cares, it invites more sociopathic behavior.

Some of this seems to have been cleaned up, but it is quickly being trashed again. The only solution is to first, plan on cleaning more tha than once, and second, having police patrols helpful keep people out from behind the fence. This CT Dept. Of Transportation property is off limits anyway.

The area around the train tracks is a dumping ground for trash, and as we've seen, dead bodies. I don't think it's unruly to ask for the city to patrol and watch over it considering....

This is the current state of the area, updated April 9. Our volunteers from Friends of Union Street Dog Park cleaned the park and the sidewalk, but we need the city /state /railroad, they can fight it out, to clean this up.

Needs to be addressed.

I go there almost every Sunday and I dont like that there is garbage there once because the netting on the bottom of the fence was not adjusted right my dog almost went over there I amm glad she didn't because what would have happened to her. she could have eaten something bad or fallen onto the train tracks.

The city or the state need to work out who is going to go behind the fence and clean out the trash that accumulates there. Aside from what people camping out leave, there is just regular litter behind the fence where it borders the sidewalk for most of that side of Union Street. It really makes the area look horrible. Friends of Union Street Dog Park cleans the sidewalk several times throughout the year, but we can't get beyond the railroad fence.

Is 721 days a reasonable timeframe to clean this? Let's not rush. How about 921 days?

Unbelievable, right? I have had a traffic and pedestrian issue open for over 500 days without a single acknowledgement from the city. Upon searching for it, it seems to have been deleted without notifying myself or anyone else.

There has been a new homeless encampment behind the concrete wall for months. 871 days and waiting. How long is that to-do list?

I am very sorry that it has taken this long for someone to respond to you. I spoke to my boss about this complaint yesterday and he has authorized me to take responsibility for it. I will visit the park today and then have this trash picked up. Again, I apologize and assure you that the City does care about its citizens and resolving their complaints.

I went to the park and looked for the trash. No problem finding the trash; it looks like a landfill down there. I've reported it to the New Haven Police Department and they have agreed to keep an eye on this site for illegal dumpers. Also, there is no access for city personnel to get back in there. New Haven Police will work with me to get someone at Amtrak to clean this up. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I've had issues going on 6 years and still not addressed. I've given up. New Haven is doing its best to drive me out by its apathetic attempts to make this a livable city. Disgusting trash, no jobs and unfriendly people. I gave it seven years.

Dear LCI, We really appreciate your taking a look at this situation again.

But I need to point out that if people have been able to get in this area to create this huge encampment and collection of trash, and to go in and out all day and night, then there IS indeed access. In fact, a few years ago we climbed over the concrete wall from the park (it's only about 5 feet high) and cleaned out all the garbage, but now there is the added complication that it is an active camp, and that is partly a public works issue, and partly a policing issue, so community members can't be expected to do it.

City personnel can get back there very easily if they want to. It is frankly just not accurate to say that there is no access. When they were looking for body parts a few years ago, and it was all over the news, the city had no problem getting in and cleaning it up.

We would appreciate it if the city could overcome this slight difficulty of it being behind a fence, and just get it done.

Please don't give up on New Haven. It really is a wonderful town with great people. I'd like you to know, there are a lot of great initiatives being put forth to improve the quality and quantity of services to residents. Not to mention, economic development initiatives aimed at creating an exciting and favorable environment for businesses to grow and thrive in. However, having said that, I would like to know what your complaints are so that I can work on them or, at the very least, direct them to the right department.

You are correct, illegal dumping is a problem in the city but, rarely is it a New Haven resident that dumps. When we've gone through the trash we often discover that the trash has been dumped by people outside of the city. Although, there is dumping in New Haven, what's most important to know is that we always strive to stay ahead of the curve and we care about this city and we will not stop trying to make it a fantastic place to live.

Many times complaints are posted on SCF but, it fails to get to the right department. It can take a long time to get a complaint but, that too is improving and you always have the option to call in a complaint if it is very important or an emergency. Please feel free to exercise that option.

Jobs are difficult enough to secure even in the best of times. However, know that the City of New Haven is constantly working on ways to get businesses interested in New Haven and we make a real effort to keep the ones we have and help them grow. We have many economic development initiatives aimed at increasing job opportunities for the residents of New Haven and those efforts are ongoing - even in the worst of times. Cities are always evolving and it is the hope of all of us to guide this evolution toward making New Haven the best city to live in.

Finally, please feel free not only to post your complaints but your ideas on improving the city. Constructive criticisms are always welcome. It quite literally takes a village to improve situations. Both the City and it's residents must work together actively to improve livability.

I spoke to my boss early this morning regarding this situation. He will be going out with me either later on today or tomorrow to view the trash and figure out how this needs to be handled. I will get back to you.
