Description
There maybe over 40 miles of roads in this town but more attention could be paid to where our seniors in town live. I saw that the potholes and sweeping is done in quadrants and seeing the sweeper on Elm Street on Friday, made me wonder when the multiple potholes on Duncklee Ave were to be filled and if the town highway dept. was again going to wait to get in touch with our town housing dept or hear from one of us seniors to let them know when they are going to sweep, so we could move our vehicles. It would be nice to have our town depts. work with each other. Thank You !

In Stoneham there are more than 80 miles of road both public and private; state and municipal. The Public Works Department will examine Duncklee Ave Monday morning. The biggest help to our department, especially on dead end streets, is to notify our office by calling 1-781-438-0760. Our limited resources are scheduled before the day begins and to maximize efficiency stick to their scheduled tasks unless an emergency situation exists.
You may have misunderstood another SeeClickFix post which indicated sweeping operations are done in quadrants. Potholes are done by location and severity. Friday pothole operations started on Broadway at MacArthur first so morning rush hour traffic could clear out before making repairs on Cottage Street and William Street to the Town line. The goal with potholes is to maximize repairs in close proximity to eliminate wasteful travel time trying to grab 20 potholes in different directions. If the severity of a pothole threatens public safety a "cold patch" material is placed until a permanent patch can be made.
Your sweeping quadrant is the Northeast and was performed first last year. This year your quadrant will be swept last. Information will be posted Monday with an approximate time this work will be performed. Per your request we will contact Stoneham Housing again this year 2 days in advance to have vehicles moved.

Unfortunately Garden Road (The portion referenced) is a private way and will not be paved. The use of tax dollars on private ways is against Massachusetts General Laws. The Town will fill in potholes before the winter due to the potential for damage to town vehicles and personnel during snow plowing operations. The Department of Public Works plows the street due to the need to provide emergency services and trash collection in the winter.
If residents would like to have the street paved they may do so on their own or petition the Town Administrator for the Town to perform the work. The residents would still be responsible for the cost.
Information relating to submitting a request to the Town Administrator can be found in the Town Code available for viewing at http://www.stoneham-ma.gov Click on the “Where Do I Find?” button on the right -> Letter T -> Town Code -> Chapter 13 -> Section 13-14 Temporary repairs for certain private ways.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Department of Public Works at 1-781-438-0760
