Description

Intersection of Broadway and MacArthur Rd. The DPW suggested contacting the TA regarding the chronic pothole problem at this intersection, as they do not have the money to properly repair. This is a constant problem yearly not just a result of this years snowfall. Here is the DPW response:

The Department of Public Works understands the frustration regarding the condition of the intersection of Broadway and MacArthur. Unfortunately the funding provided for the MacArthur Road Drainage Project was estimated to stop just beyond Aricia Lane and never enough to complete the project. However due to competitive bids the Town was able to have Joseph P. Cardillo & Son, Inc install additional materials that brought the system up to Hillside Ave (+/- 740 linear feet) and still be completed 1 month ahead of schedule.

In order to bring the system to the Broadway / MacArthur intersection an estimated $160,000 in additional funding is required. No funding has been provided to the Department to complete this work and the only money available now is through the Chapter 90 program. Using these funds would remove approximately 3,000 feet of street paving from the current program. If you have driven down Franklin Street, specifically in the Rustic to Perkins stretch, you will notice how the mix that the State required to be installed, as part of the Franklin Street reconstruction, has prematurely failed creating large scab areas. The Town does not install that mix during its Chapter 90 paving work.

If the Department has Broadway repaved without installing a drainage system at the intersection of MacArthur the road will crack and return to its current condition before the theoretical useful life of the top course of asphalt.

The Department attempts to spend every dollar as efficiently as possible. The estimated cost to repave only this intersection is $4,400 and may need to be ripped up in 1 to 2 years if funding is allocated to complete the necessary work.

Contact the Town Administrator, David Ragucci 1-781-279-2600 or Office Manager for the Board of Selectmen Erin Sinclair 1-781-279-2670 if you would like to make a request at the next Board of Selectmen meeting to have discuss allocating funding for drainage construction in the future.

Potholes will be examined and filled as necessary. Thank you for your patience
