The smell was even worse than usual yesterday when i passed by. Maybe in a years time computers will have "smelly vision" and you can all share just how unpleasant it is - we are not talking "roast chicken" here...

here it is in a snap: Astra started in a district zoned for commercial use and mysteriously aquired new zoning for industry. there is no wall separating the huge, loud, insect creating, stench protruding factory, no name on the biulding. ten feet accross the street are homes with people in them. the whole neighborhood stinks of a combination of sewage qnd rotted meat most of the day, off and on, depending on the breeze.
no official does anything permanent about it. sewage treament trucks areba regular sight in the neighborhood. our sewage rates keep getting hiked despite an infrastructure grant from the federal government.
the stench is so strong it is enough to gag a child playing outside. its a shame, because these people actually care about this place, despitenit being neglected by local officials.

Other parts of Upper Darby have had totally new sewer lines. We got our 70 year old sewers relined with dust. If they were clogged with Astra fat before, at a larger diameter, they will definitely clog up now. The sewer inspectors come on a regular basis, because of ASTRA. Every time the inspectors come, it smells like sewage. This is another smell, on top of the ASTRA daily rotten food -i don't know what smell. Last week they had the sewer pumps out here AGAIN, Even after we have had the streets ripped up 3 times in 5 years. Again, sewer smell. Again, our sewer rates have gone up.
This company is an expense to the local tax payers. Whoever owns it is obviously making money at the expense of our own misery and money. It was set up so unprofessionally that they dumped huge amounts of fat runnoff into the sewer, until it exploded, 3 years ago. Ever since then it has been non stop sewer problems that actually cause backing up into people's homes! At one point a storm drain expoded like a guiser into the street! Still the smell, and the sewer problems continue. The factory smells horrible. In the summer you can't open your windows on a nice day. Then the sewer truck comes, you can't open your window then. Why should I suffer because these people are making money? They didn't set up their business properly, and got away with it...why? Where was the local government? Where was the zoning? What are my taxes doing to pay my elected officials here?

Going up Afton onto Powell was noxious, yesterday afternoon. The smell seems to pool there due to the gaps in the houses and the street.

This smell has spread to the area by Powell Lane and Astra. Children getting off their school bus there this afternoon (Feb. 24th) were greeted with an incredible offensive smell of sewers mixed with some cleaning substance that smelled like propane. Calls to township public works were brushed off.

Today around 4pm there was a consistent, concentrated odor that one would describe as propane and maybe sewage, or methane. There were kids getting off a bus, and each one as they got off said, as they made a gross face, " Ewe! What's that smell? Did somebody @#$%? Or die? Let's get out of here!"
When I got home, I called public works, who transferred me to the health department. The health department transferred me to the fire department's office number, as I explained the aforementioned. The fire department's office number was an answering machine. The end.
The person at public works sounded displeased and said that I should always call the fire department directly when I smell this smell. I said we smell it all the time, and there' s o fire, but it is particularly bad today with a strong side kick of propane. She said to always call them, anyway, when one smells a gassy smell.

Now, on top of the smell, this plant is "treating" the entire neighborhood to noise pollution. A sound similar to the noise a plane makes when it is taking off, can be heard well over a block away inside with the windows closed. Will someone please do something about this factory in a residential neighborhood?!!

This factory has a foul stench that has become so bad, that while standing in my kitchen cooking dinner, I could not smell the food I was cooking over that stench.

Awful odor used to afflict neighborhood west of meat factory. After many complaints to Astra, stench now hits community north of this meat factory. Don't know what they did to change the direction of the problem.

No community should have to put up with this problem.

Periodic now... but still AWFUL when it hits. It makes one want to vomit. Funny how one company like this can absolutely DESTROY a neighborhood.

I agree. It almost seems that onthe colder or rainy days, you get more stench. As if they are thinking...no one will go out today, so Ill make it stink.
But, we are always ouside, or even on a cooler day, have a window cracked open, to suddenly have your home enveloped with sewer steak.

What a beautiful, breezy, warm night. Opened my bedroom windows, only to get up 15 minutes later and quickly shut them because of the overwhelming stench that is pure Asstra wafting in. What a disgrace. I can hear the trees shaking in the breeze. So lovely. But it STINKS like a giant dead rotting chicken flew in my window. This has got to be illegal.
