Description

Over the past five winters I have lived here I consistently walk up Orange Street and 503 Orange has also consistently failed to ever shovel the sidewalk outside of their building. At first I thought this might be an issue of an elderly owner, but I have seen very able-bodied people going in and out, so that does not seem to be the issue.

Right now the sidewalk is a mix of snow, ice and slush and it's very treacherous to walk by. Additionally, only one person can tightrope walk through the small path at a time. Please, do your duty and shovel your walk.

Amen! I just tried to walk through there about half an hour ago, and I nearly slipped and fell a couple of times. You either have to walk sort of sideways or with one foot directly in front of the other, which is not easy in these conditions.

We reported this to our Alder, Abby Roth. She is talking with LCI to try to get this resolved.

I emailed with the owner last might. Turns out her partner has a broken leg, and she has been sick for 2 weeks. She said she would go out there today to shovel.

The city has to start issuing tickets to people who do not clear their sidewalks. It is very dangerous because of the risk of falling, also it may force people to walk in the streets which presents another safety hazard. I saw on the news a town in Connecticut that will shove sidewalks when the owner fails to and then charge them.

Personally, I think that issuing tickets to home owners or billing them for the shoveling is a perfectly fine idea. If the city is so strapped for cash, as they seem to indicate in comments I've seen on See Click Fix, then that would be one way of actually making a little more money. Granted, it wouldn't be a large amount they'd make, but it would be something. And it would be the impetus for people to do a better job of clearing their sidewalks!

Hey Lisa, I walked by this house again today and they did not shovel yesterday after it snowed and now the sidewalk is an ice sheet. Since you are in communication with the owner, is there anyway for you to ask them to at least throw down some salt?

If this is a disability issue, maybe they could offer some extra cash to the people who do snow removal for the law office or insurance company next door.

Well the thing that bothers me is that I asked her if she wanted me to get a group of SOHU volunteers to do the sidewalk for her and she said no. I offered it twice. So I don't know that she would be willing to pay someone. She had even told me that LCI had talked to her about it and gave her a day to do it. I just emailed our alder and asked her to go back to LCI on it.

Original poster here. Thanks, Lisa, for attending to this issue for us. I'm not surprised she didn't shovel yesterday as she has failed to do so this entire winter. Hopefully Abby will be able to convince her of this safety issue.

I asked our Alder again today if LCI has stepped in here. Abby is trying to find out, but she asked if the ice and snow is melted from the sidewalk. Can someone tell me who walks through there?
