The Vision Appraisal database does not show a property listed at 575 Blatchley Ave. There is an abandoned property at 501 Blatchley (at the intersection of Blatchley and State Sts.) The property has been abandoned for at least eight years. The property may be in foreclosure due to non payment of taxes and money owed to the GNWPCA...
I think the original poster was referring to 501, yes; it's been empty since I moved to New Haven several years ago. Windows were recently broken, yes, but it's now been placed on the market, so perhaps it will sell? (maybe . . .)
The house at the corner of Blatchley & State (501; part blue siding, part fake brick, boarded/broken windows, etc) was purchased by Levitin Management and they've now posted their signs on it. Try 777-3844 to contact them. They'll probably eventually rehab it; they've got quite a few of these around town.
driving by yesterday I saw that the windows are broken and boarded up and the rear yard is covered in trash. This place is a total dump and an eyesore; it looks worse every time I see it. Having any building permits been issued for this dump?
What happened was that they COMPLETELY filled the dumpster, and all the bags/debris in the back yard is what's leftover. They originally had all this out by the curb, but no doubt someone told them that the DPW would not pick up building debris. Considering how much stuff came out of the house, I'd say they're definitely in the process of rehabbing it. Unfortunately it's a slow process, from the looks of it.
Thanks for addressing this issue. There is garbage all along the fence facing Blatchley Ave., a junk couch and garbage in the rear yard. Also, it appears that there are people living (?) in this property as I see lights on inside ( a red light on the second floor, as seen through the broken window - nice). Is that a "stop work order" posted on the Blatchley Ave. side of this eyesore? I wonder if the owners and tenants of Erector square realize what a turn off this slum building is to their business, as it is to all businesses located in Fair Haven - would you want your customers to drive - forget about walking or biking - past this skanky, rundown rathole, to go to a Yoga class, art studio or even all the way to Fair Haven furniture? I guess if you're going to buy crack in Fair Haven it's okay... I'm sure it's great for the nail salon business next door - NOT.
neighbors' desperate attempt to ward off evil tide of garbage and bad vibes flowing from 501 Blatchley slum... Not content to have garbage covering the ground, the management has even put trash up in the trees.
I asked a young man walking past 501 Blatchley slum what he thought of the place: "NASTY". So, hundreds of kids get to pass by this nasty slum everyday, twice a day, before they go under the dark, dirty I91 underpass on their way to school. I wonder why so many kids hate school?
Looks like work has started up again, as I saw several guys in the house yesterday when driving by who appeared to be working. Any update on the permits and the "stop work" order?
I did not see any work going on yesterday at 501 Blatchley slum, unless you consider the broken downspout laying across the sidewalk as "work". Also the weeds, in the curb strip, are approaching two feet high.
It's 501 Blatchley; there's still the stop work order up from the last visit. At least they've cleaned up the bags of demolition debris that wouldn't fit in the dumpster; used to be on the curb! Levitin owns it.
I hope they're not waiting for Gov't subsidy, crying poverty to acquire some grant moolah...I did'nt think Levitan,Pinsky & Chen of 393 Whalley ave.2'nd floor would do such a thing, they were working hard with section 8 housing and Mr.Solomon the wise (inheimer)
..perhaps work with the nail salon next door in some sort of mini strip mall ..?? or is that part of the plan with leaving it like this, ruin the biz next door ....
Drove by yesterday. Place looks worse than ever. Side door was open. No one around. I am not concerned about the inside. I want the OUTSIDE cleaned up and repaired. Better yet, as Ben says, torn down and made into a community garden.
More blight. Another MENACHEM LEVITIN slum property. I wonder how the fire [really] started. Sulo [sic] Investments aka: SOLO Investments. Is someone at city hall involved in this scam?, A lot of corporate names seem to be misspelled in the tax assessor's database...
Looks like the alleged fraudster, slumlord, Menachem Levitin, who has been allegedly ripping off mortgage companies (no honor among thieves!), who owns this property, finally he has been arrested by the FBI
The FBI should investigate the possibility of arson too, and ask some questions of whomever in city hall investigated the mystery fire in this building and blamed it on a mentally ill woman, who was allegedly resident in this uninhabitable building at the time of the fire.
The city apparently has told the alleged fraud slumlord, Menachem Levitin, that the building has to be torn down - finally.
As far as we know....the owner is planning to rehab the house. We saw some activity there this week. They have an active 2010 permit, and prior to that they pulled a bunch of permits in 2009:

I doubt that any work is going to be done on this property. This property and 50 other properties under control of the alleged fraudster, Menachem Levitin, are currently under a legal cloud. See United States of America vs. Menachem Levitin:

The permits were probably generated to prevent the city from seizing the property. Any lawyers out there who can comment on this situation?

The property has been fenced in, but still looks like a dump.

Driving by the other day I noticed that there's a dumpster out back, so hopefully they're working on rehabing the house now.

Are you sure they weren't stripping the house for metal, etc..?

This house should be leveled and turned into a community garden if nothing else.

It's the North East corner of Blatchley and State I believe Rafael.

I'd love to make it into a cafe with a garden out back - with some train-related name. But looks like instead there's going to be a shoddy renovation.

If anyone hears of any plans by the owners to sell - I'm very interested in creating a restaurant/cafe and community arts center there.
Ben (Admin)
LCI would you be able to connect RAM to the owner. That seems like a great use for the space and the neighborhood if they are willing to sell.
