As of last Thursday, this person was still living in the park. Tonight the temperature is going to be in the single digits - don't we want to get him into a warm place rather than leaving him out there on the river bank?

Charlotte, any word back or suggestions from anyone you contacted about this? I would think Columbus House or responsible City agency would try to help. This person's been living in the park for a few months now. Let me know if you'd like me and/or other folks to make a follow-up call or two to help encourage some action on this.

Thanks for your interest, Chris - the guy is still there - we saw him yesterday, he comes out at 7:30 am on his bicycle and heads toward the tennis courts while several neighbors are walking dogs in the field below the end of West Elm Street. I have had no response from any City staff to my 1/5 email which I sent to Ranger Harry Coyle, Park Dept. staff Christy Hass, Petisia Adger, and Robert Levine. Adam Marchand at least wrote back to express concern. Christy told me in November that the pollice and social service departments should evict the guy and then Parks will clean up. But I have no idea how to get hold of anyone that can say when if ever they will actually move on the eviction. So if you can pursue this it would be great.

I spoke with Lt. Tchakarides at the CMT meeting this evening about this. He has experience dealing with similar issues and said he'd go in and check things out this week. I've forwarded him this post and let him know precisely where the guy is camping. Similar situation in West Rock Park above Amryhn Field the past few months so I've asked the Lt. to look into that as well.

Jan 23 and he's still there - fresh track of his bike in the snow. It would be helpful if some city staff would acknowledge this problem and post a plan for resolving it.

Feb 7 - the guy is still living in Edgewood Park and last night had an overnight guest - or a roommate? Is any action being taken or are we waiting for the next flood to scatter the encampment along the river bank downstream?

Charlotte, I just made another round of calls & emails to Parks, NHPD, et al. Bob Levine is apparently out until Feb. 10. I will discuss with Lt. Tchakarides at the CMT meeting tomorrow night on Valley Street as well and encourage you to attend to further impress the importance of this issue as well. Chief Esserman will be in attendance as well, so we can even ask him what the policy is and what actions can be taken ASAP.

Hunger Games are on..Yes those are the luckiest souls in New Haven and it's various parks and no mans lands.No press,no pressure,no worries mate..Usually these adventurous park dwellers are dealt with swiftly,even long before Ranger Dan at East Rock were residents like this guy removed promptly..Maybe the goal here is to add another special edgewood constable

Is this man or woman living out in their little tent in the woods really disrupting your life? Does this person's tiny encampment out in the woods truly reduce the quality of anyone's lives? Obviously this person might be experiencing some other serious problems in their life if they've resorted to this as their home, so why take even this away from them?

I'm not aiming to insult or demean you or anyone who has also written in here hoping to remove this squatter, but instead I'm genuinely trying to ask you how it negatively affects any of your (or anyone's) lives. Have you seen this person doing any other illegal, dangerous activity? Such as drinking in the park, taking drugs, bothering/pestering other people in the park? If not, I'm just not sure I understand why this bothers you and why you find it necessary to have the person removed.

I understand it may seem perhaps unfair to you to see someone else squatting or "free-loading" (whatever you'd like to call it) while you have to work and pay rent/mortage and taxes for your home, but we don't everything about this person's situation. As you said, they could freeze to death out there in this cold Connecticut winter weather. So it's likely that whatever situation they're in is pretty rough if they've resorted to fighting off the cold in a tent out in the woods in a public park. So, if this person has not been doing anything to endanger or bother others, why give him more trouble? If he indeed HAS been seen drinking or using drugs or pestering other people in the park, then that's another issue, and I would understand wanting him to leave the park, but I have not heard anything of that sort, at least not yet.

Like I said, I'm not trying to demean or insult anyone who has commented on this page, I just want you to ask yourself how this man or woman sleeping out in the woods in their tent is truly reducing the quality of anyone's life. And also, consider the problems this person already has under their belt. Being homeless is hard.

Thanks to the workers who solved this problem. Still some cleanup needed at the campsite but campers are gone.
