This tablet MUST be recovered! Our American History has been stolen again! Please repost this because it is New Haven's history that is being scrapped by metal thieves who could care less what it said or commemorates!! I have admired this tablet as far back as i can remember and it is the last one left. I took this picture of it knowing it was at risk and now it is gone to be melted down like the rest of our illustrious history here in New Haven. George Washington WAS here and now who will know?

That's really messed up. This building IS New Haven history. I've done work on the building before (installing plaques!) and have lived here for 29 years. What a shame.

Here is a photo of the Historic Tablet. Please get the word out to all the scrap metal yards in Connecticut.!

AWESOME NEWS!!! After sending a photo of the plaque to many scrap dealers in CT, I was contacted back this evening by Alderman-Dow. The stolen George Washington plaque was brought to them this afternoon! They have it in their possession, it is intact and will be returned along with the ID of the person who brought it to their scrapyard ... The police dept has been contacted. Now the city of New Haven has to figure out how to secure the bronze tablet back onto its original location so this does not happen again... and prosecute those responsible for its theft.

Thanks for staying on top of this, Robert. We all owe you our deepest gratitude.

Here's an SCF success story (in case you haven't seen it already). BTW, WTNH gave full credit to the scrap company for recognizing and saving the plaque. Nothing about the private citizen who led the effort through SCF.

That is so nice that you found it. But it really should never have happened.Every day we read about muggings on an hourly basis downtown, bikes, christmas presents stolen from cars, drug dealing around coffee houses, street vendor fences selling your wares.
Cops across town playing Santa, hopefully not on city dime.

Still need to do something about the missing Abraham Lincoln plaque at State/Court - my understanding is that it was "pre-emptively" removed.
