Want to add insult to injury…literally? A few years ago the snow that the City plowed onto my sidewalk led to a slip-and-fall claim that cost my insurer $60,000 to settle (and didn't help my premiums). The City's ordinance reads that the property owner is responsible for injuries on the sidewalk. However, I couldn't prove (the claim wasn't made til months after the event) the City had plowed the snow onto my walk after I'd cleared it, but as you see, it happens ALL THE TIME. Indeed, sometimes I wonder why I should bother to clear the sidewalks before the street plows have done their thing and filled the sidewalk (and looking around, it appears many neighbors have come to that conclusion). Those of us who live at intersections bear an additional burden of trying to clear our corners….it is truck against shoveler! Whoever agreed to that ordinance that places the burden of removing the street's snow from a public sidewalk, AND the insurance risk, onto the property owner?
