Description

Where Potomac Ave meets 1st St. SE, the traffic light has two phases: green for both 1st and Potomac and red + crosswalk. This intersection is a popular connection for bicyclists transitioning from the street network to the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail. Traveling southbound in the bike lane, it is not evident that continuing south through the intersection to the curb cut it not a permitted path (indeed this goes into oncoming traffic from Potomac Ave). There are no signs or indications that bicyclists heading to the trail must pull to the side and wait form a pedestrian cross signal. Yesterday, I witnessed two bicyclists confidently riding straight southbound with a green light (thinking they were doing it right) directly into a fast moving car's path. Yikes ART TrailRanger GH
