The Anchor, on College St? I remember that when I first came to New Haven, on my first day on the job, I was looking for a place to eat and landed at the Anchor. It was good food then and friendly. That was some years ago. Last year I wanted to eat there again, for old times sake, and opened the door and there were just a few people in there who ignored me until I asked why they were ignoring me, and someone came over but discouraged me from staying.. so that was that. It's not the same as it used to be.
The Anchor is a unique landmark, giving us an urban texture of diversity and adding social value to downtown. I'd also say an historical place for the memories of it's customers over decades of listening to its jukebox and those last, last calls. Forcing the closing of the Anchor is a conceptual and community relations mistake.
Banks on (almost) every New Haven corner and franchise restaurants creates a bland shopping center predictability. Banks on street corners, in fact, are downtown business killers; dead empty spaces at night, sucking up visibility in the daytime. New Haven is a nighttime city. The Anchor is a contributes to this atmosphere attracting customers to places around it as well.
Maybe the Anchor used to be what David says, but it hasn't been for the last couple of years,, just a few cliquey people inside that look at you like an intruder when you peek in. If they want to stay then they should be a bit more inviting to the general population.
