wow, a crossing guard actually doing her job!!!! How many do I see, gabbing on the corner with folks, not paying attention to anything... I would ask all guards be retrained and reminded of their responsibilities How would you be stuck in the middle of the intersection, when you should not be in the intersection in the first place, if people (children) are crossing? I think our crossing guards need access to issuing tickets to violators. I have seen lots of indicants where drivers pay not attention to pedestrian's crossing.

If you think that a crossing guard's duty includes stopping/detaining motorists, berating pedestrians & motorists and creating confusion with emotional outbursts then I hope you never become one. On top of that, you think they should also stop motorists to write tickets??? Oh, so who will be doing HER JOB of crossing the children while she is busy trying to write a ticket to an angry motorist who has no respect for a crossing guard?? That is for the police to do. If all of this drama at this intersection is truly warranted, then a police officer should take it over. But I don't think it's necessary. I have never seen so much drama at any school crossing before. In my case, I was making a LEGAL turn and yielded to pedestrians who were not even in the crosswalk yet. I patiently waited before proceeding. She was too busy chatting on the opposite corner with her back to me, not doing her job and turned around without a clue and started screaming at me as I proceeded to complete my turn. I didn't think much of it but after seeing so many similar incidents with her, I had to speak up. On top of that, she is very rude and condescending to people with her eye-rolling, head-shaking and arm-flailing. It's all very immature and unprofessional. Just because a person is screaming and yelling all the time, it does NOT mean they are doing their job correctly. It's quite the opposite. If you see other crossing guards who are not doing their job, I hope you raise a complaint about them also. Whether they are chatting or losing their self control and fighting with motorists, it leads to the same problem....they are not paying attention to the children crossing the street. It's a simple job, let's keep it simple.

You probably have some valid concerns, like you said, if she were talking and not doing her job. Hysterics are not necessary, but how is a crossing guard going to enforce laws? She sounds like a very passionate person (to say the least). Great if crossing guards could take plate numbers and turn them in at the end of the day. I don't know how else a crossing guard could enforce traffic laws. Write down plate and car description.

I see plenty of motorist fly right past a cross walk, with children and a crossing guard trying to cross. I see school buses stop to pick up children and not turn on their red flashing lights, especially at the day care centers. Maybe she is just fed up with bad drivers. At lease she cares.

Yes, I totally agree with you there. They should definitely take plate numbers and report motorists to police but that should be the extent of their role because anything more than that will take them away from their responsibility of the children. Plus, they would need more training, maybe more pay and a new job title. That becomes a whole other issue. They are only "crossing" guards. All they can do is make sure traffic yields for pedestrians in the crosswalk.The police cruise by frequently to move people who are parked illegally and that is their job. They normally don't even write tickets. They just tell people to move. Her situation could have escalated quickly when she tried to detain a driver who did not want to be detained by a crossing guard. He could can ran over a kid in his effort to flee. I walk past her everyday to drop off/pick up my kids so I see how she behaves every day. Yes, passion is great but it must not get out of hand, get in the way of your duty or be mean-spirited.

I just got back from picking my my kids and she was not there. Hopefully she was not hurt by the car that "bumped" her but she chose to put herself in that position. A police officer was there in her place this afternoon, likely due to today's event and boy what a difference. No screaming and yelling, everyone quietly crossing the street on their own, traffic moving freely.The officer didn't even have to play the role of "crossing guard" or yell at people. Just his presence alone on the corner was enough I suppose.

The crossing guard at roosevelt does an amazing job. I think she does great and the fact that she's yelling to WARN people about the possibility of getting tickets , oh she's terrible I tell ya. Just plain rotten
