Adding to the inevitable, the Pedestrian Right of Way signs have been removed from this intersection, so cars rushing between Trumbull and Humphrey no longer feel obligated to stop for pedestrians going to and from the bus, or to Cafe Romeo. Someone is going to get hit…only question is whether it will be one of the kids accessing the school busses at the corner, a Yalie getting aboard the shuttle, a townie getting coffee at Romeo, or one of us who actually live right there.

@KRP I followed the bus from Willow street. There were no cars parked in the bus stop across from P&M, and no cars at Ecwards street. There were cars at Pearl st.

Don't know what to tell you. When I get on at Pearl, there is often a car or two parked in the bus stop. I have seen the same up and down Orange. I saw a car parked literally in a crosswalk a couple of days ago, in front of Cafe Romeo. People park where signs clearly indicate that they can't. Likewise, when people get off the bus at bus stops that are at intersections, often other cars try to go around the bus and wind up almost hitting people. It has happened to me, and I have seen it happen to many others as well. When buses do pull over into the bus stop, it sometimes takes forever for the driver to get back out on the street because no one wants to let a bus out in front of them. Instead, people slam on the gas and try to get by the bus before it pulls out. People need to just have a little more patience that what I see drivers around here have.

For the record, the issue is not limited to Yale transit...the City busses also have stops at that intersection of Pearl and Orange, as do City and private school busses. The danger is from cars pulling around to pass and compounded by the MISSING SIGN in the intersection warning drivers that pedestrians are crossing.

Yale buses behave as school buses--they stop in the center of the road, blinkers on, etc--and not as public buses, which they should. They are not transporting children and passengers can get off and wait on the sidewalk for the right time to cross the street. Besides, these buses often run half empty--why not use vans, which are more appropriate in size to the narrow streets of East Rock? The situation is worse during the winter, when the snow on the sides of the streets make them ever narrower.
