Description
The section of gravel road is an uposted 50 or 55 mph. This is way to high for this section of road. It is 35 on one side and 40 on the other. Why is this section 55? There are many accidents on this section of road every year. I have seen at least 5 cars slide off the road (lived here 2 years) and take out trees within 100 ft from my house. What happens when one of these cars hits my house at 55 mph? What if my 2 year old daughter is in the yard when they go off the road? This road is always in horrible condition and never safe for cars going 55 mph. Please lower the speed limit.

The speed limits on gravel roads are set according to state law. The Road Commission does not have the authority to set a limit that is contrary to state law. The state law sets the limit based on the number of "access points" along the road (side streets, driveways, alleys, etc.). The number of access points on Lochaven results in the current speed limit per state law.

Our experience is that the State Police will not do agree to do a speed study on a gravel road. The State Police must sign off on any speed study. Therefore, without the approval of the State Police, nothing will happen. It was the State Police who led the effort that resulted in a change in how speed limits are established on gravel roads several years ago that resulted in the speed limit on most Oakland County gravel roads increasing.
Also, please remember that the law says that motorists must drive at a safe and reasonable speed for the conditions. If the cars are flying off the road, it would seem they are not driving at a safe and reasonable speed for the condition, and therefore could be ticketed under the existing speed limit.
