The unused planting strip visible in the photo is approximately 18 feet long and just under 4 feet wide. A bike rack with space for two bikes to park side-by-side requires an area measuring 4' x 6'. (A parked bicycle occupies a space measuring 2'x6').

What Nica's really needs to do is stop allowing their delivery trucks to block traffic on Orange Street almost every morning during rush hour.

It's extremely hazardous when you have a backup at the intersection of Orange and Humphrey, huge delivery trucks parked half in the street, customers trying to get out of Nica's parking lot.

I would do most of my grocery shopping here if the store had a bike rack.

A lady that lives on the next block likes to lock her bike on the page fence in front of the adjacent house,halfblocking the sidewalk ( almost half) .

yes, please. if it would make it more attractive as a shopping/snack stop option for cyclists, I don't see why the owner isn't jumping on this.

Any progress on getting a rack for Nica's?

In addition to approaching the owners, I think that the Dept. of Transportation, Parking and Traffic has some funds left to put single racks in various locations throughout the city (Ethan Hutchings is the contact person).

Yes, I believe that both Nica's and the DOT are well aware of these requests over the past year (and before that).

They have also been notified through this website.

Sounds like it would make sense to invite Ethan and the owners to meet with cycling advocates on site. I think making phone calls and setting a date might resolve this issue sooner rather than later.

I think people have already done that, Paul. At this point, asking more people to speak up, contact the city and "vote" here might be the best way to focus attention on the issue.

In fact, there should be bike racks throughout this neighborhood, at least at every intersection, both for commercial and residential visitors.

The lack of secure racks is a major deterrent to promoting more sustainable and affordable transportation in the city. When you visit your friends' house for a dinner party or a store, you want to have convenient parking.

The city already spends millions of dollars on providing and maintaining tens of thousands of on-street parking spaces, essentially free of charge, in every neighborhood in the city - why can't they put in a couple of bike spaces?

second Ben's comment about delivery trucks - those and the folks not using the parking lot - flinging doors open in the door lane make that stretch of Orange street almost as exciting as the intersection w/ Trumbull. Also bike rack ++
