10/2711 Pedestrians, bike riders and wheelchair bound residents of Town Center must cross 12 traffic lanes in order to bank, shop......... on the west side of South Independence Blvd. AENGUS - BLACKWATER
Independence Boulevard was constructed in accordance with the standards at the time which did not provide marked crosswalks across eight-lane facilities. This policy has changed and, as funds become available, crosswalks are retrofitted. To add a crosswalk at this location will require also adding pedestrian Walk/Don't Walk signals, as well as modifications to the traffic signal electronics and wiring. In addition, a pedestrian refuge will need to be constructed in the median of Independence Boulevard, and the existing lanes will have to be modified to accommodate this change, which significantly increases the cost of the project. A conceptual design will be put together and construction costs estimated for this project. It will be added to the backlog list and compete with similar projects for funding.
I hope this information is helpful. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact our Traffic Engineer, Mr. Robert Gey, at 385-4131 or rkgey@vbgov.com.
