All popular trails in Bangor have lots of trash, especially along the Kenduskeag and the Penobscot.Citizens: Don't litter, not even cigarette butts! City of Bangor: Pick up trash and place garbage cans!It is a disgrace!
A bunch of people from Penquis Cap us a spot by the foot bridge to smoke. I often see tons of cigarette butts, paper coffee cups, and other litter left behind. I also find it disrespectful that they smoke there while joggers and walkers need to breath in a ton of smoke from 5 to 10 employees standing in a group smoking there. I understand they can't smoke near the building where they work but they should at least go to some other end of the parking lot out of the public's way. But the main thing is that if they won't move away from the foot bridge they could at least pick up after themselves instead of using that area as their own personal trash can. I've often taken a plastic bag down there and picked up their butts for them, paper cups, Styrofoam cups, and other trash that could easily end up in the stream. It's pollution.
A lot of homeless and those that stay at shelters hang out in that stretch of trails during the day, and some do at night too. A good place for druggies to hang out too, since the Bangor P.D. doesn't patrol the trails, or at least I have never seen any of them down there, except further upstream where the picnic areas and parking lots are. I agree that it's disgraceful! A lot is shown to others by how we take care of the environment (and people) around us. Comparatively, when I was in London, and England in general in August 2005, I saw hardly any litter on the streets, in the parks, etc. and they are a city of 7.8 million.
I noticed that a lot of Maine's public parks don't have trash cans like in other states, very few benches (if at all), and arn't very nice. The only thing they do is mow the grass.
