Description

The bike lanes on 55th Street are great, for the most part, but the shared-lane section from Shattuck Ave to Telegraph Ave is terrifying. The drivers along this block are completely unwilling to share the lane with people on bikes, and often pass at high speed and at very close distance even with oncoming traffic. Perhaps it is due to the proximity of the Hwy 24 on/off ramps but people are very impatient on this block and always rush to pass bicyclists even to just reach the next red light.

The bike lanes on 55th Street desperately need to be extended to this block in both directions, even if it means taking out on-street car parking, which is largely used by shady camper vans anyway. If bike lanes can't be accomplished in the short term then "bikes may use full lane" and/or the new "give three feet to pass" signs should be installed in both directions as soon as possible.

A mural and better lighting on this underpass could also help to calm impatient drivers and encourage them to act more responsibly, as well as discourage the frequent dumpers and taggers. If some measures aren't taken then it's only a matter of time before someone is injured or killed here.
