Mind your own beeswax. The question is, where is the water coming from?

I notified the Bulding Dept last week and they have already been there. Letters of violations have been sent to the owners. This 'drainage ditch' has been open for nearly a year, if not longer.
As for neighbors who see this type of work going on around them and have questions if there are proper permits in place, you are always free to call the Building Department and ask them, They are very helpful and often can send an inspector for you.. If not, call your Alderman who can help.

Yes the building department has been notified multiple times sometimes 4 times a week for the last several months. Their answer is the same every time. They won't do anything about it. Last time I called I was told something to the fact that it's not our problem and that the neighbors have to work it out.

I dont' see that happening as the homeowner is a bit of an idiot. I'm not calling him names by any means. Ask anyone around him they all agree.
This man starts a project and NEVER finishes it.
There are (4) projects that I can name that he has started and never finished.
1. the rock wall going around one side of his house was never finished.
2. the front porch has never been finished.
3. His new ditch on the side of his house which has been ongoing for several weeks now.
Not to mention the broken bluestone from the dump truck that dumped the drainage gravel.

Alderman... this homeowner has never had a building permit in his windows. How do I know? I live within 30 feet of his house and see his house every day.

I've been fortunate enough to see his back yard and it's worse than the front.
How about the building department actually do something besides spin their wheels.
They have done nothing. I'm to the point where I called a real estate agent and they told me that this guy is driving down my home value due to shoddy home.

There are some very beautiful homes in the area and residents take great care in taking care of their property.

There is a list of jobs that require no building permit; there are jobs that require a building permit but don't affect the valuation for assessment of the house, and there are some jobs that require a permit do affect the value of the property. If this guys situation is such that it fits none of the above, than you are past your bounds. What you may not recognize is that landscaping, even if you put any money into it, will NOT affect the assessment of your LAND. The value of the LAND remains the same and the same as all its comparable land parcels. If you think that landscaping does affect land values, than you won't understand your neighbor. Instead of going to the Building Department next time, go to the Assessor Office with the question of just how the condition of the "neighbor's" parcel affect your parcel. Are you contiguous with the offending property, adjacent to it or not even close? Makes a big difference.

What's the status with this now? If not resolved, then this could be grounds for use of the nuisance ordinance.

Don't get frustrated. It takes time to get things like this fixed. The city can't just go condemn the property. It is a long process for the city - and probably not a priority if you have any concept of the other problems that the building department handles and the lack of funding.

So keep on it. You have a new alderman, so be sure to get them involved. Persistence will pay off in the end.

Don't hold your breathe that anybody is going to come and change the neighbor's place. You have to file a grievance in the assessor office for Grievance day if the assessor won't lower the value of your property first by agreement. There is a new city assessor. Have him come and do a field audit, which is your right, by the way, not only for your place and the neighbor's place, but have him bring a map of the neighborhood you are in with the values of each and every parcel in it. The land value and the structure value. You need the assessor to do a field audit of your joint. Also, make sure you have a witness there, and tape record it if you are able as well as getting inspection documents in case you need them. This way, your tax burden will be reduced.

This property owner had a 6 month permit- time is up!!!!!!!!! The last permit he had took 5 years to resolve!! Enough is enough! What will it take and how long till someone steps up ? Why do we have alderman? And where is the building inspector? i HOPE THE NEW MAYOR WILL BE ABLE TO DO SOMETHING

Sometimes,, property owners are "connected" and the assessor office will "carry " them until one thing happens: a neighbor files an assessment grievance using the parcel owner being carried by the assessor office as a "comparable", particularly when the comparable property is right next door. Then the person grieving wins and the parcel being "carried" ain't carried no mo'. I have seen it happen with my very own eyes, and it's quite remarkable to see the aggrieved stop suffering and unjust share of taxes. So look the property up in the assessment roll book and have a look see?

it looks horrible and i live rite down the road! something need sto be done! theres just been a mess in that yard for at least 2000
