Description
There is an arrow for turning traffic in all other directions except westbound from Womack Rd to Ashford Center Parkway. If there is someone wanting to turn south on Chamblee Dunwoody Rd, and there is eastbound traffic, and they don't pull into the intersection or if there are two cars in a row that want to turn South, it backs up the whole line of traffic.
In fact, there should probably be exclusive green lights AND arrows for ALL directions meaning each direction of traffic should have its own exclusive traffic flow; one for each of the four directions of traffic.

I agree this is a big problem. It is compounded by the fact that traffic eastbound on Womack get green while westbound on Womack has red, so westbound traffic wanting to turn south on Ch-Dunwoody may never get a chance to turn.
I suggest that westbound traffic on Womack needs a left turn lane and left turn signal.

Thanks to all for the comments. A left turn lane would be needed in order to make the left turn arrow effective. The city will have to plan to add the turn lane as a future capital project. In the interim the city has adjusted the timing of the light between 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. to better accommodate school traffic. The timing remains the same during the morning and afternoon commute so that the signal can stay in coordination with the signal at Mount Vernon and Chamblee Dunwoody.
The city also plans to remove the right turn restriction by improving the visibility to the south as part of an upcoming sidewalk project.

Thanks to the Public Works for looking further in to this problem. Let's hope the change in lights during the time school gets out will help. I occasionally pick up my child at Dunwoody Elementary, and going west on Womack can be tough some times. However, the trip that was burned in my memory was the one I made last spring when we had the snow storm. We spent more than one hour on Womack between DHS and Ch-Dunwoody, mostly stopped with occasional creeping along.
It wasn't until we finally got within a block of Chamblee Dunwoody that I realized what the problem was -- cars ahead of me trying to turn left onto Ch-Dunwoody were holding up all the traffic behind them. During some green lights, only one car would make it.
We need the Police depart to have someone man that intersection to keep traffic flowing (as much as possible in those conditions) should there be another weather problem. Once the lights and turn lanes are repaired, things should go better.
