Isn't it against the law to have a car parked on street w no registration or plates? Should the DMV be contacted? Police? I don't think car is abandoned. Just illegal.
Yes, it is illegal to even park a car on a public street without license plates or current registration. Because the car has no plates, it is considered inoperable and should be towed. If a car is parked in the same spot for more than 72hrs, it can be towed.
And yet after 3 days, there it sits. It's not a manpower problem. The revenue from proper enforcement would more than pay for the manpower required. It is yet another symptom of Oakland's lack of desire to set standards for itself.
I agree that it would generate revenue, but currently they have limited staff to do the job and LOTS of abandoned vehicles reported. Typically, when I report a vehicle to the abandoned auto detail, one of the OPD civilian techs sends me an email, letting me know if the car was ticketed or towed or was no longer there when they arrived. An abandoned car blocking traffic or an abandoned stolen car is going to get priority.
Who tickets unregistered vehicles? Parking Enforcement? Yiou could email your OPD problem solving officer and ask. communitypolicingbeat28@oaklandnet.com
Will anyone fix this issue? Community officer, that's the only option here? Car, no plates. On road. Over a week. Anyone. Please. Next call is to the press.
