Observant Neighbor- Our child is one of the 5 students living at this residence, 706 Pershing, that has you so concerned that you invoked this investigation with the City of College Station. In compliance with this city ordinance we are currently working with our student's landlord and the city's code enforcement office to determine a reasonable timeline to relocate my child. As you can imagine relocation mid-semester for a college student is a hardship on our family physically and financially. You may not realize that many, many students in College Station and many other college towns live with more than four related family members in a dwelling do to the high and rising cost of rent and tuition. Sharing these housing cost allows students to gain the experience of renting their first home and live with friends.
I know that in this case these five Texas A&M students are of the highest caliber and you should be proud to call them your neighbors. They have been respectful and honored all of their neighbors, many times parking their cars at alternate locations as to not impact other neighbor's rights. These students as of now are complying with whatever timeline the city mandates to move out one student-MY CHILD. We are respectfully asking the city to allow us to move our child by Dec. 20th. We ask for your patience and consideration as we work to find another affordable and safe location for our college student to live.
As a homeowner with 2 houses nearby, I am frustrated with the landlord who is knowingly breaking the city code to rent to your child and 4 friends to pocket the most cash possible. My rental has 4 occupants.
I report all the homes that have more than 5 or more cars parked there each day to keep up the property value of my homes. I too have a college student and fully understand the cost of rent and tuition.
We certainly understand your frustration and we are sure that there are many reason you are working so hard to have your neighbors follow compliance rules. We certainly respect your rights as a property owner. But in this specific case, all we are asking from you as parents is for your patience and grace while we try to relocate our student. Will it inconvenience you if we make the move after finals on Dec 20th?
I spoke with the Landlord today and all of the houses he owns will be in compliance after this school year and he has given notice to all of his tenants. After reviewing the lease and observing the updates he has committed to this property it is obvious that he is not renting these properties for extra profit. He clearly wanted to help students with affordable housing.
I am curious why the landlord was unaware of this city ordinance? It has been in effect for several years now and is in the news frequently because there are so many rentals in violation. Please read the following link to the City of College Rental Registration form; it clearly states no more than 4 unrelated tenant allowed.
