The entire GSP/Route 35 interchange is poorly designed and fraught with peril. You're actually referring to Route 35 South there. People have the right to expect a merge lane off a major road like the Parkway, but the lane ends abruptly without warning. I've battled countless people merging there without yielding. Most are terribly surprised that they don't have a lane and they dive off the road and onto the shoulder. They can't fathom that you might need to be in the right lane for that turn onto Beers Street, so they try to push you to the left. It's a great intersection for road rage, if you need to vent some steam. Going northbound, you can get cut off by people with NY tags who don't realize the Parkway North exit is in the left lane. The GSP sign announcing the exit is immediately before the exit, which is over a rise and cannot be seen until it's too late. Gov Christie needs to come down to Keyport and see what a mess this interchange is. I'm truly surprised there aren't more accidents.
