Description
I travel down New Hanover Ave's hill toward Main Street South Meriden almost on a daily basis. I stop at all stop signs however I have almost been rear ended or because others in back of me near rear end me they swerve into the oncoming traffic lane to avoid rear ending because they themselves do not stop at the stop sign. In fact, all the times I have been in back of others, never have I witnessed anyone stopping at that stop sign going around the bend. Need camera to evidence rear end accidents when potentially in a "hit and run" rear ended accident

I do understand the necessity of the stop sign. They way people speed down the hill is dangerous. Just yesterday (Sunday 08/20/2011) I again encountered a near fender bender because I come to a complete stop at the stop sign like everyone is supposed to. A white car again sped around me into the oncoming traffic lane just as I was pulling away from my complete stop. I did scream "stop sign" He didn't get far because he had to stop at the light at the bottom of the hill. I asked him "why didn't you just hit me" No answer from the man behind the wheel. I can honestly say that 8 times out of 10 that I travel the route, I encountered issues like the one reported.
My concern is that if I do get rear ended at that stop sign, it is too easy for people to just go around me and leave the scene to avoid liability. Luckily due to night blindness I do not travel anywhere in the evening. I can only imagine how much more dangerous that stop sign is to those of us that obey the law and do come to complete stops.
I never travel the hill in winter until I feel sure snow/ice has been removed and the road is treated with sand and salt. My safety comes first in the winter time.

I thought these issues being reported are received by City Officials already? In past experience, sending written correspondence by first class mail to 3 of our City Official higer ups resolved nothing due to their neglect/inconsideration in even replying to acknowledge the receipt of my correspondence. In a final attempt to be sure my correspodence was indeed recieved (Postal Service is a whole other issue) I sent my correspondence to just the Mayor (regarding same issue of all other first class mailings) certified mail return receipt requested, recieved the return reciept (green card on back of envelope) and even that mailing went without a response. For this reason, I used this forum opposed to wasting postage/money when it comes to corresponding with our elected officials. My suspicions of laxed treatment in individual taxpayers concerns is confirmed by what I experienced.

I've already come to that conclusion. I looked into "citizens arrest" to see if it still exists. Each time I use this road, now I make sure I have my digital camera ready to start taking pictures of the irresponsible vehicle operators. My camera will always be set on zoom in order to get a picture of he car, tag number and hopefully a picture of the vehicle operator. My camera is also set for date and time stamp so I have no confusion of when events took place.
So all you people who think your are exempt from coming to a full stop at that stop sign, be warned, some people are just fed up with the way you almost cause injury (avoided rearend accidents) and how you swerve into the opposite direction traffic line to get around those of us who do come to a complete stop at that stop sign into the on coming traffic lane
I'll close this post when I get the reminder email from ClickFix. I see no reason why people who took a test to obtain driving privileges knowing they studied dor the test and in those studies "what do you do when you come to a stop sign" provided the answer of "come to a complete stop then proceed with caution"
My thanks to ClickFix for allowing me the opportunity to post my concerns.

Sorry Jason, I think you should have the civic points deducted from your total that is displayed.
1. I will be the one who follows the rules of the road by coming to a complete stop at this or any othe stop sign I come to;
2. I will have camera hanging around my neck ready to take quick pictures of vehicles adn hopefully the operator of who find the need to apply brakes at the last minute and/or swerve into the oncoming traffic lane in order to avoid colliding into whatever means of transporation I shall be using on any given day (ie car, scooter, bicycle).
3. If there should be any other cars behind me at the time I find the need to take pictures I'm sure I'll hear the blast of horns in the attempt to get me to proceed from stop sign. If I experience horn blasts it will be caused by those who are in such a hurry they are oblivious as to the serious danger that is taking place before their eyes.
4. I am not in any way portraying myself as an activist nor am I attempting in any way to boost revenue for the city; I simply reported a dangerous issue on this forum
5. I can not say if there have been any accidents at this location; however experiencing near misses and watching how others swerve into the oncoming traffic lane....well then, wouldn't that make you thnk that it is just a matter of time that there may be an accident. An accident that can cause very serious personal injury to another since the stop sign is placed int he middle of a steep hill with others not applying brakes to slow down in order to even do the speed limit. Yes Jason its just a matter of time before accidents occur. Guardrails were not put along that curve for decorations, obviously something happened causing the placement of guardrails and since it was not a complete fix to obvious issue, the city was caused to place a stop sign for further attempts of the uderlying issue.
Care to grab a chair, pack a picnic and sit in the wooded area, out of sight and in safe distance, to observe how few people stop at this stopsign and how many are excelerationg at high speeds down the hill which would make it impossible for them to stop at the stop sign?
Question, just what do you get,in return, other than having your name plasted all over clickfix, when earning those civic points?

Its unknown if anyone has taken the concern seriously. I guess we will just have to wait until an accident occurs that possible serious injury to another may occur, as one comment posting suggests.
Additionally, I only used the roadway to go to Henny Penny and due to the questionable charity jug they had on the counter, which I made donation to, I no longer patronize the store.
I will keep my fingers crossed and pray for all that use that road needing ot stop at that dangerous stopsign.
