Interesting thing. The taxpayers are still paying off the bond used to build it. Filled it in because we were told that we the City could not afford to hire "skate guards" at the same time that the mayor is proposing to spend $1.6 million on Waterfront Park.
Seems crazy.

PD - Please check your facts.
1. The entire skatepark has been open, insured, and unstaffed for years. The rest of the skatepark (aside from the bowl) continues to remain open and functioning.
2. The city filled the bowl using taxpayer money. Somehow they found a way to afford that.
3. The bowl was open, insured and unstaffed for years before the city filled it. There were no safety issues nor insurance claims nor lawsuits during that time.
All we ask is that Saratoga follow the model of a free, public skatepark that is practiced in literally thousands of cities and towns across the country. They allowed the bowl to be built, and we have been given literally no explanation for why it has been taken away.

You are putting Saratoga skaters to shame.
If you don't want to dig out the pool I know me and a pack of of able body skaters that would dig that bowl clean.
Please open it again.

I ended up moving here. You have a great town. But you do a disservice, not only to skateboarders and their families, but to the community as a whole. You are lowing your appeal to families, and are now virtually one of the only towns in the US without an adequate skate park. I have been to smaller poorer towns with far superior skate parks, and these always include bowls. I recently vacationed in Prescott, AZ, where there was a beautiful big skate park with two bowls. It was not staffed, and the park was open until ten pm everyday. It was well used, by teens, adults, and kids, skateboarders, BMX riders, and roller bladers. Is Saratoga willing to be so old fashioned it doesn't recognize modern sports? Or the wishes of its taxpaying young families?
Your football fields and swings invite accidents just as much as any skate equipment does, and no one seems to be suggesting you plow over the sports fields or wading pool. Are you biased against the non-traditional appearance of the sport and its pracittioners? I invite you to visit with skaters, watch them in action, and appreciate the grace and skill of the sport.
Please do right your community. Be the contemporary and inviting town I was so charmed by. A community that supports all ages and interests without bias, and that leads the way, rather than trailing behind.
