While police does not feel like bike thefts are of any importance, I continue to repeat that unless we act upon any infraction, we will always be victims.
In the City, crime rates begun falling after the police chief introduced the zero tolerance policy (Giuliani then took credit for all of it, naturally). Cops would stop people for the slightest infraction of the law...New Haven: Kids on bike on the side walks. Adults on bikes on the sidewalks. People throw garbage out of car windows. Run red lights in the car and bikes. Ride bikes and scooters against traffic; the wrong way on one way streets. etc etc And the cops do..? Nada.

It's a shame that bike theft is not taken more seriously here in New Haven. In the last week two friends of mine who live in the East Rock neighborhood have had their locks cut and bikes stolen. It's a shame that the people who will rely on their bicycles for commuting and put hard work and money into their bicycles are ripped off and don't have the back-up of their city's police force.

Were the bikes all outside when stolen? What kind of locks were on them? What were they locked to?

They were outside. One was on the sidewalk locked to a fence facing the street. The other around the side of a building on Orange street. Both had cable style locks.

Sorry to hear about the bike thefts. I strongly recommend U-locks for all bikes, especially if they are locked up outside for long periods. Cable locks are easy to cut, and just about every bike theft I've heard of in New Haven have involved a cable lock being cut.

Unfortunately, all locks are easily broken with a simple, cheap and easy to come by tool that I wont mention ---just in case anyone tries to get any ideas. It can bust any lock, even the U locks. Locks are unfortunately useless. Its come to the point where its almost encouraged to bring them in with you. I suggest investing in a foldup bike if its your main source of transportation.

In Minneapolis, Mn, bicycles are licensed. Therefore you have a license number on your bicycle. Why don't people think of that here?
