Description

Funky restaurants needed and subsidized art studios. Look at Birmingham and Chattanooga. Rojo in Birmingham is a great place with prices only a dollar or two above McDonalds. The Art District in Chattanooga has several galleries and specialty restaurants. We could make empty spaces a subsidiary of the Huntsville Art League and the Flying Monkey. Also a Walking tour narrated via Ipod and convertable seating busses with headphones could do the same thing.

Yes, visitors or conference attendees at VBC need something in walking distance to eat and do after conference hours. Most everything in downtown except the bars closes at 5 or 6pm. That's not visitor or conference attendee friendly. If people can't afford Ruth's Chris, don't want pizza or bar food... they're kind of stuck in our down town if they don't have a car to get away from their conference hotel!

Comparing Huntsville to Birmingham and Chattanooga there are lots more of these kind of places there than here. The Fish Market in Birmingham has it's own vans that make regular rounds of the city and bring people to the restaurant and back. There are two restaurants in particular in Birmingham, Rojo and Silvertron with both bars and tasty low priced menus. Food does not have to be expensive to be unusual and delectable. Go to http://www.silvertroncafe.us/ and http://rojo.birminghammenus.com/. Both have vegetatrian and specialty dishes. Chattanooga has the Gallery district with low cost fresh Italian food and subsidized galleries. We need to get with the program.

I've stated my case. The Huntsville Planners are working on the issue. Population moving downtown is necessary for the cheap, funky eating establishments I'd like to see there to be sucessful. Birmingham has that. They also have a considerably larger general population.
