Description
NHPD issues warnings about muggings around Church Street South of pedestrians heading from train station to downtown. The response, according the New Haven Register, is to place ugly, prominent "No Trespassing" signs around the complex. How about some more positive pedestrian wayfinding signs, maps and walking or bicycling ambassadors sending people down Union Ave and State Street (or whatever the preferred route might be)? How about some better lighting on the preferred route, some plantings, etc? City of New Haven, New Haven Parking Authority, Yale University?

Install a path of Blue Emergency Phones from the Train Station to Downtown. The installations themselves will act to create an optimal pedestrian route for people to follow, which is especially helpful for people who arrive in New Haven for their first time. The Blue Phones will create a route that others will follow making it less likely that an individual will find them self completely alone while walking from the Train Station to Downtown.
The path created can monitored by police (on bike or otherwise) more efficiently. The Blue Phone stations will light the path and, if necessary, provide a person an immediate and direct line of communication to Police Officers and provide Police Officers an improved method for locating a crime in progress.

This sounds like a project for Town Green. I know there's a ton of federal money out there for way-finding right now. It would be great to we it put to use here.
