Yes!! Fix this please. It's ridiculous - we spend all this money to paint sharrows on roads, while the lights don't even change for bikes. I now press the pedestrian cross light, but it's technically illegal...
Too bad. You are a vehicle if you don't like the way the taffic system works complain to all the people who push for traffic control devices or you can wait like all the cars have too.
you missed the point. many of us cyclists are happy to wait at a light that will change for us, just like motorists.
but, some lights don't have enough consistent car traffic and when there is no way for it to know a cyclist is waiting there, that means we wait longer than the motorists do, because they trigger a light immediately.
I have heard a lot of people complain about this bike sensor problem lately, here and at other corners. It is kind of an embarrassment for the city if you ask me. I thought we were trying to attract residents here, not make them think our city is something out of the stone age. To make matters worse, NHPD continues to issue more tickets to cyclists than to speeding drivers who kill people.
I believe you continue to miss the point. The stop light does not recognize bikes. So Juli will sit there for the entire night if a car doesn't come and trip the sensor.
I believe Juli is requesting to be fairly treated as an automobile and simply given the ability, like any other auto, to trigger the light so that she may comply with the law.
Her point is important - if you give fair and equal access to our roads, you'll get greater compliance. If you do not have technology that allows for a bike to be recognized, well then you can't really complain when they run red lights.
w/r/t the middle finger - i would not suggest using this tactic when evading police. additionally, i believe a bicyclist in pursuit would be able to catch you through our busy downtown because of the stop lights.
w/r/t cabs hit pedestrian ticket --> cars being ticketed for hitting a pedestrian doesn't happen as much as you'd think, even when the car is at fault.
NHPD has a no chase policy on red light running in new haven - for the safety of the officer.
yale traffic violations ignored? what does this mean?
I agree with Juli's point 100%- but here me out- Near where I lived there was a broken traffic signal that has been for weeks so the Police would show up and after 10 minutes of waiting, someone would eventually run the light and the Police went after them for running the light. May I quote NHPD " you will wait there until the light turns green if it takes 100 years" how does this help anything?? The Police knew the light was broken so instead of GETTING OUT OF THEIR CARS AND DIRECTING TRAFFIC or turning the lights to flashing they did essentially nothing except issue tickets after cars burned up $10 of gas waiting for a broken light.
My point is if thats how automobile laws are treated then according to our finest, fair treatment would be to sit there all night until a car came along to trip the light.
Seriously has anyone though of putting in an additional sensor?
BTW when there is no traffic around or late at night just do as the tow trucks, garbage trucks, police and Yale transit buses do- look around- "no cop no stop" so go through it. Sometimes the forementioned even slow down before running the light. Or get off your bike, press the walk signal wait for it and walk your bike across the street. if you get a ticket you can appeal the ticket up to highest court in the land and the City MIGHT get around to figuring something out.
In case you haven't noticed New Haven is self defeating this way- promotes less car use and installs bicycle lanes and such, but then starts enforcing bicycles running lights because their infastructure plan has a flaw. Then in addition starts to enforces laws they never have before (except in extreme circumstances). Only to compound the issue.
Solution- tell NHPD to stop ticketing bicycles at intersections that aren't working properly or tell them to respond by sayin "what can I do ?" or at least best if you can catch the bicyclist their probably not a menace.
I disagree with the Police aren't allowed to pull over cars that run red lights. Pursue no. Attempt to stop yes. - my point is I see officers watch cars run lights and do nothing yet they will chase a bike. Particularly at the end of RT 34 and frontage rd- I've asked Police why there not doing anything and they throw up their arms and go "What can i do ??"
as to my response to PD catchin me on a bike- I only treat others with the same respect they give me.
My point on the cab was the cab was running a light and hit a pedestrian in a crosswalk and only got a warning ticket. How does that work? NH Independent article last year in the fall.
If you havent noticed that NHPD turns a blind eye to blatant traffic violations by ANY Yale vehicle your eyes are closed. There is this "unwritten" policy that YPD only enforces their own and NHPD leaves Yale alone.Recently I watched a Yale transit bus stop at a red light then go through it with a Distrcit manager at the green side of the light and another officer parked at College and Chapel sitting in their car next to me, they watched the whole thing.. B4 that I Watched a Distrcit Supervisor let a tractor trailer without it lights on go thorugh a red light and block an entire intersection through two complete light cycles and did nothing- except drive around the problem.guess the Shubert is on that list too., I can think of 4 m/v violations for that one alone, but I double park for 5 second and the cops are like move it along.
Good Luck Juli it may be years before any changes are figured out so i suggest bring a book with you.
Just to point out something,
If there is a no chase policy and bicycles are considered vehichles then aren't the police not allowed to pursue bicycles because they may cause someone to get hit by chasing them into a street???
I'll add to "I H8 NH"s comment. A couple of months ago the bridge between ferry street and state street had a problem with the light. I sat there for 20 minutes in the middle of the day with cars backed up behind me as the light cycled through skipping my green. There was a cop parked RIGHT THERE. I had to turn right on red and then hang a U turn. I stopped and let the guy know as I drove past him that the light was broken but I'm sure if I just blew it I'd be getting a ticket.
We are trying to delineate issues that are current and need the city's attention to resolve. Any issues prior to 2013 are being closed. If your issue remains and needs to be addressed by the city, please either re-open or open as a new See Click Fix issue. Thanks.

juli- just wait like all the cars have too.
I would like to see NHPD try and catch me for a ticket on a bicycle the only thing they could go on is the description of my middle finger.
Cabs hit pedestrian- ticket
Cops watch cars go through red lights - no action taken
Yale traffic violations are ignored- isnt that discrimination???
