Engineering investigated on 5/20/2014. The City and other jurisdictions typically do not provide crosswalk markings at driveway entrances as they are expensive to maintain. Do to budgetary constraints the City is not currently able to maintain crosswalk markings at all marked intersections. Drivers are conditioned to expect pedestrians at driveway intersections and required to stop for pedestrians. No action will be taken at this time. K. Chris Hammer - Engineering Manager.
Chris, I have a question in response to this- if such crossings are important to public safety, then do we have any requirements that the property owner maintain or cost share to maintain such crosswalks? I don't buy the argument that drivers are conditioned to expect pedestrians at driveway intersections- I have frequently seen drivers pull way out across the area that a pedestrian would walk without looking to see whether pedestrians were approaching first- particularly at that intersection, as it is on a slope with poor visibility from drivers exiting the shopping plaza. If this is a question more for planning than for public works, I would appreciate any suggestions of who I might speak with in that department to pursue this issue further.
At the time the development was permitted crosswalk markings were not required of the developer. Had they been required the frontage improvements would have been dedicated to the City and the City would then be responsible for the maintenance.
